3rd Meeting of India-Qatar Joint Working Group on Labour and

Manpower Development

Mr. Mohanish Verma, Protector General of Emigrants and Joint Secretary, Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, Government of India led a 4-member delegation at the third meeting of the Joint Working Group on Labour and Manpower Development between India and Qatar held in Doha on 17 August, 2015. The Qatari delegation was led by Mr. Saleh Saied Al-Shawi, Director, Department of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. 

Before delegation level talks, HE Dr. Abdulla S. Al-Khulaifi, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs of the State of Qatar received a call by Mr. Sanjiv Arora, Ambassador of India to Qatar, accompanied by Government of India’s delegation, in the presence of the Qatari delegation. 

HE the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs of Qatar conveyed his Government’s deep appreciation for the vital contribution of the large, accomplished and highly regarded Indian community to the progress of Qatar. He underlined Qatar Government’s commitment to the ongoing process of labour reforms in Qatar. 

The Indian side thanked HE the Minister and conveyed that Government of India accorded the highest priority to the well being and welfare of Indian nationals abroad, and highlighted major initiatives and steps in this regard. They thanked the authorities concerned in Qatar for their cooperation. They welcomed the process of labour reforms undertaken by Government of Qatar, and conveyed that Government of India looks forward to the implementation of further measures being considered. 

At the delegation level talks of the Joint Working Group, both sides had cordial and fruitful discussions on a wide range of issues related to the well being and welfare of Indian nationals in Qatar, with particular focus on Indian workers. The Indian delegation also availed this opportunity to discuss some specific humanitarian cases. 

On their arrival in Qatar on 16 August, the visiting delegation were briefed by Ambassador of India and also had a meeting with the President and other office bearers of the Indian Community Benevolent Forum, a community organisation functioning under the aegis of Embassy of India, Doha to help Indian workers. 

Before leaving Doha, the Indian delegation would be visiting the Labour City in the Industrial Area in Doha.
