The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), set up by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India in 1966, is the apex body of the gems & jewellery industry in India. Today, it represents over 6,000 exporters in the sector. With headquarters in Mumbai, the GJEPC has Regional Offices in New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Surat and Jaipur, all of which are major centres for the industry. The gems and jewellery market size is about US$ 75 billion as of 2017 and is expected to reach US$ 100 billion by 2025. It contributes 29 per cent to the global jewellery consumption.

India is one of the largest exporters of gems and jewellery and the industry is considered to play a vital role in the Indian economy as it contributes a major chunk to the total foreign reserves of the country. India exports 75 per cent of the world’s polished diamonds, as per statistics from the Gems and Jewellery Export promotion Council (GJEPC). India's Gems and Jewellery sector has been contributing in a big way to the country's foreign exchange earnings (FEEs). The Government of India has viewed the sector as a thrust area for export promotion. The Indian government presently allows 100 per cent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the sector through the automatic route.

The Indian pavilion is being mounted within the framework of the on-going ‘Qatar-India Year of Culture’ which showcases vibrant culture and art forms of India in Qatar. Indian jewellery designs are characterized by their unique and sophisticated craftsmanship, influenced by the rich history of architectural designs and elaborate art motifs. The Pavilion will be inaugurated by H.E. Mr. P. Kumaran, the Ambassador of India to Qatar. The special Indian Pavilion is expected to attract participation by prominent Qatari businessmen, experts and connoisseurs in this field. The Indian Business and Professional’s Council (IBPC) which functions under the aegis of Indian Embassy, is also organizing guided tours and B2B meeting for those visiting the Indian pavilion.
