Indian Ambassador to Qatar Mr. P. Kumaran recently honoured two award-winning artisans from the Kutch region of Gujarat.
The artisans, Abduljabbar Khatri and Suffyan Ismail Khatri, were in Qatar to conduct workshops at the Hekayat Tasmeem Doha 2019 international art and design conference hosted by VCUarts Qatar.
The workshops, from March 16-18, were held at Katara Building 19, presented by Qatar Museums, Year of Culture, Katara Art Studios and VCUarts Qatar.
Absuljabbar conducted the Bandhini workshop at Tasmeem Doha to present the technique of thread resist, typing the sections of a fabric tightly with thread, dyeing the fabric and then untying the fabric to shoe the design. He also shared his explorations of new techniques in tie-dyeing.
Sufan Ismail specialises in the highly skilled and complex hand block printing technique called Ajrakh. He showed the workshop participants the intricate steps of creating hand block printed textiles, preparing the fabric to applying the resist, adding mordants (dye fixatives) and the final printing of colours.
